How to Make Your Car Last Longer

Did you know?

The average age of a car is around 12 years on the road.

Fret not.

Here are some simple things you can do to extend the life of your car.

Check Your Tire Pressure:

Maintaining the right tire pressure is an important car maintenance tip. If the pressure gets too low or too high, you can run into serious issues as well as reduced fuel efficiency.

Check your tire pressure at least twice a month but once a week is even better while adding air to your tires. Make sure they aren't warm to the touch and don't overfill them. You also have to change your tires in a timely fashion.

Make sure to swap the front and rear tires at least once annually.

Be Careful with the Gas and Brake Pedals:

Sharp acceleration and sudden braking can give you an adrenaline rush.

But the bitter truth is that such things only harm your vehicles. Your engine takes a lot of beating while the brake pads and discs wear out faster.

One more thing—it takes more fuel when you are about to take a sharp turn. Your tires will get bald even faster.

Therefore, it is better to give up on this habit as it takes a heavy toll on the transmission and causes a costly repair.

The same holds for putting the car into drive or reverse. Make sure to stop the car completely and only then change the gear.

Get Your Vehicle Inspected and Serviced:

Make sure to get your car inspected from time to time.

However, not all drivers are serious about this and neglect routine maintenance.

Keeping up with regular checks and inspections is an efficient way to prevent a costly car repair later on. Refer to your car manual to determine the right time to get your car services for maintenances such as oil change, filter changes, and other repairs.

Take a Note of Dashboard:

The symbols on your car’s dashboard can let you know about the potential issues.

For example, they help you determine when the engine gets overheated or if there is something faulty with the electrical system, or if the brake fluid level is low. Such indications mean it is time to visit an auto mechanic.

Maintain Your Car’s Battery:

If you don’t drive your car more often or it is parked for a long time, the battery is more likely to degrade.

A trickle charger can be used to keep the battery in top shape if your car is parked in a garage for a long time. Or you can use a battery conditioner if it is not able to hold more charge.

Jumping start a car can put a burden on the battery and might impact the engine system and other delicate electronics.

If you still want to take care of your battery without a trickle charger, try to drive your car at least once a week if possible, especially in winter.

Keep Your Car Covered:

Many of us own garages, but not many of us use them. In other words, not all people are likely to store their cars in them.

Most are left on a driveway or a road. It can be justified as some cars are too big to park in a garage. If you don’t have a garage or your garage is too small to accommodate your large car, consider buying a high-quality cover to protect your car from scratches, dirt, grimes, and weather.
